AP Chemistry Kinetic Molecular Theory KMT Clothespin Task Card Race
Are you looking for engaging practice in identifying the relationship amongst gas variables using the Kinetic Molecular Theory? Try out this engaging clothespin task card race that represents relationships among pressure, volume, and more, in addition to the tenants of KMT.
Students will practice identifying the following:
relationship between pressure and temperature
relationship between pressure and number of molecules
relationship between pressure and volume
relationship between temperature and volume
relationship between number of molecules and volume
relationship between size and speed of the molecule
conditions under which a gas behaves most and least ideally
Each team is given a few clothespins and one task card to start. Working together, students decide which flask or container best fits the prompt. They pin a clothespin to the appropriate bubble(s) on the card, and bring it to you to get checked. If they are correct, they discard that task card and pick up a new one. The first team to correctly identify all 18 task cards is the winner!
The pdf document that comes with this resource includes 18 clothespin task cards in both a color and ink saving version. The pdf will also include a student recording sheet for teams to keep track of which cards have already been completed (or for the teacher to mark when teams are correct). The instructions document includes both directions for implementation and a key. This resource does not come with clothespins-you will need to supply your own.
