AP Chemistry Ordering Periodic Trends Card Sort Printable Partner Activity
Try this partner card sort for practicing periodic trends with your AP Chemistry students! In this activity, students practice ordering elements based on a provided trend, as well as add explanation cards using effective nuclear charge and shielding on either end of their order. The following trends and/or topics are included in this card sort:
ionization energy
atomic radius
electron affinity
electronegativity
effective nuclear charge
shielding
Students work in pairs to order four scenarios. Each instruction card contains the instructions, such as "increasing ionization energy." The instruction card will have a symbol. The students will find all the elements that also contain that symbol, and proceed to place those elements in the order indicated on the instruction card. Lastly, the students add a card with an ENC explanation and one with a shielding explanation on each end of their order.
